Getting to Know Sandbridge and the North End

Sandbridge sits 15 miles south of the Virginia Beach resort strip, a narrow peninsula of sand between the Atlantic Ocean and the Back Bay. Locals call it "Virginia's Outer Banks," and once you've been there, you understand why. Four and a half miles of beach stretch from the Dam Neck Naval facility in the north down to the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge in the south. What you'll find here is something increasingly rare: rental cottages tucked behind dunes, a family-owned general store that's been serving the community for decades, and the simple sound of waves that doesn't stop when the sun goes down.

The North End runs from 42nd Street up to the Fort Story military base. This is where old Virginia Beach lives, in houses that have been in families for generations, built between dunes with views that can't be replaced. The beaches here are quieter than the resort strip, parking is harder to find, and that's exactly how locals like it.

Back Bay and False Cape

Just south of the park, Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge protects 9,200 acres of beach, dunes, and marshes. Established in 1938, it sits on the Atlantic Flyway, making it a critical stop for migratory birds. From October through March, you might see tundra swans or snow geese.

False Cape State Park rewards those who make the effort. Six miles of undeveloped beach lie beyond the refuge, reachable only on foot, by bicycle, or via the seasonal tram. The payoff is a vastly remote beach that looks the way it did a hundred years ago – undeveloped, uncrowded, unforgettable. Camping is available by permit for those who want to stay.

Little Island Park

At the southern end of Sandbridge, Little Island Park spreads across 122 acres where the ocean meets Back Bay. The fishing pier stretches 400 feet into the Atlantic. No license is required to fish in the area, and sightseers can walk to the end for a small fee. The park offers a beach for swimming, a kayak launch into the refuge, picnic shelters with grills, tennis and pickleball courts, and a playground. Lifeguards are on duty daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

The North End

Head north from the resort strip, and you'll find the North End, where the pace slows down and the beaches open up. Parking is limited, so expect a short walk from public access points. The neighborhood's charm comes from its mix of old and new, where you can find century-old cottages standing alongside modern beach homes, all sharing the same incredible views.

Built for the Coast

All of this requires structures that can withstand coastal conditions. Salt air corrodes. Humidity tests finish. Storms test everything. Despite those trying conditions, we build custom metal gates, railings, and stairs for beachfront properties that last, using corrosion-resistant materials, clean welds, and finishes designed for this environment.

If your Sandbridge or North End property needs new metalwork or repairs to existing elements, contact us for a consultation.
